Video: Neurofeedback for ADHD

This is a great video resource from EEGInfo.com. It tells the heartwarming story of how Sam, diagnosed with ADHD in 3rd grade, struggled with his condition and the personality-altering side effects brought on by the medication he was prescribed. Looking for a way to help him calm his mind and improve his focus without medication, Sam’s mom turned to neurofeedback, and the results have been nothing short of amazing. In Sam’s words: “Now I can access more parts of my brain. It’s opened up my mind to do more things. Before I thought I could do nothing but be a …

New Brain-Based Therapies for Children and Teens

This paper by researchers from Brown, University of California-Davis and Harvard Medical School explores numerous ways in which emerging neuroimaging technologies can be used to improve brain function for children and adolescents. Neurofeedback research provides substantial evidence of the correlation between brain abnormalities observed in EEG readings and disordered behavior, learning, thought, emotion and development. Because these disorders result from patterns of functional disturbance in the brain that can be identified using EEG technology, neurofeedback specialists can use their findings to train patients to self-correct dysfunctional patterns, helping to improve function and diminish or even eliminate the need for pharmaceutical …

Enhancing Golf Performance Using Neurofeedback

This study by Dutch researchers examines a new method of using neurofeedback to improve golf performance at and individual level. In the study, participants underwent four separate sessions of neurofeedback to identify an EEG profile for successful putts compared to unsuccessful ones. These sessions were made up of 80 putts total in an ABAB pattern, with participants receiving feedback for the A putts and no feedback for the B putts. Participants in the study performed an average of 25% better on putting in response to neurofeedback, demonstrating that being “in the zone” as a golfer has clear and identifiable brain …

Treating Attention Deficit Disorder Without Ritalin

The book Getting Rid of Ritalin, written by Robert W. Hill, Ph.D. and Eduardo Castro, M.D., details how neurofeedback therapy can help individuals coping with ADD successfully improve brain function without the need for medication. The authors explore how neurofeedback works to unlock the individual’s ability to learn what different states of focus “feel like” so that they can self-regulate in the way that best optimizes their brain function and performance. According to the authors, this not only improves the brain’s cognitive function, but also boosts overall physical health, such as the cardiovascular, immune and gastrointestinal systems — in other words, …

Using Neurofeedback to Manage Anxiety and Affective Disorders

Recognizing the need for non-pharmaceutical approaches to treating anxiety and affective disorders, this study from the University of Utah offers compelling evidence to support the further study of neurofeedback in treating these types of disorders. While the practice has strong research support as a way to manage ADD, ADHD and epilepsy, and much anecdotal evidence to support its use in also treating anxiety and depression, there is a great need for further clinical study. Because there is growing evidence suggesting the current most common method of medications may not be as effective as previously believed, neurofeedback’s potential to help patients …

Baseball Pro Using Neurofeedback to Improve Mental Focus

Major league baseball player Brian Barden was looking for a way to cut out distractions and self-destructive thoughts and take his game to the next level. He enlisted the help of Scottsdale, Ariz. psychologist and neurofeedback practitioner Sanford Silverman. By using neurofeedback to assess his brain function, Dr. Silverman can then help Brian practice his concentration using techniques such as the S.M.A.R.T. Brain Games program, a video game controlled by the player’s brain waves that was originally developed by NASA. Barden already credits the therapy for a clearer mind and better focus on the field. Neurofeedback Gains Traction As Popular Treatment

Neurofeedback is quickly emerging as a popular way to address common mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety, and more. The treatment involves using an EEG machine to create a “map” of a patient’s brain during a particular activity. The clinician can then help the patient devise strategies of practice and repetition to manage these tendencies so that their brain will begin to naturally respond in different and more positive ways, much like exercising a muscle. Proponents of the treatment assert that neurofeedback is an effective way to manage many common mental issues without using pharmaceutical drugs, which may have …

Olympic Gold Medalist Becomes Neurofeedback Specialist

1976 Olympic skier Kathy Kreiner-Phillips recently joined the staff of Vancouver-based wellness center NeuroNetwork as a brain trainer. She credits her gold medal-winning run to years of mental preparation and visualization techniques. These inspired her to launch a career in sport psychology and eventually led her to neurofeedback, which she called “a radical ‘short cut’ to the process of getting athletes – or anyone – in the zone.” NeuroNetwork president Brenda Gerhard emphasized that neurofeedback isn’t just for Olympians, but can help just about anyone achieve better overall wellness and treat a variety of mental health concerns such as stress, …

Loving Life Helps Carlos Quentin Play Better

White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin was known in professional baseball for his fiercely competitive approach to the game. After a bad play or a strikeout, Quentin was so hard on himself that he would become physically ill and felt little enjoyment while playing. Off the field though, he was described by his coach as “the biggest jokester in the room.” Quentin made it his goal to achieve greater mental toughness, and to bring his positive, easygoing off-season self into his professional performance. With the help of psychiatrist Dr. Leslie Sherwin, he has made it happen. Click here to learn …

EEG Biofeedback vs. Stimulants as Treatment for ADHD

This study by the researchers at Green Bay, WI-based LaVaque-Rossiter Consultants compared neurofeedback with the stimulants normally used to treat ADHD. While pharmaceutical methods are most widely used in this capacity, they have several drawbacks, including only temporary reduction of symptoms, the possibility of side effects and difficulty for many patients suffering from this disorder in taking their medication regularly. Neurofeedback has been reported to help achieve ADHD symptom reduction without side effects, and other studies suggest it offers lasting rather than temporary symptom reduction; however, this needs to be further evaluated. By comparing treatment programs of 20 neurofeedback sessions …
